5 Tips to Help Aging Adults Treat Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is common in middle-aged adults, but this type of chronic heel pain can also affect people over 65. Because the inflammation related to this condition can cause discomfort, it’s important for seniors to find effective methods for relief. 1. Wear Orthotic Devices

One of the easiest ways to alleviate chronic foot pain is to invest in orthotic devices. Instead of buying specialty shoes that can cost hundreds of dollars, inexpensive orthotics can be placed in practically any pair of shoes or slippers. For seniors who have plantar fasciitis, the inserts should have extra cushioning for the heels and increased support for the arches. 

2. Use Foam Rollers

Rolling is a style of physical therapy designed to gently stretch and stimulate damaged soft tissue. If your loved one does not have foam rollers, he or she can use a golf ball or a frozen bottle of water. This exercise should be done for at least 10 minutes a day after the feet and legs have been stretched. 

3. See a Chiropractor

Practically any imbalance in the musculoskeletal system can cause plantar fasciitis. Seniors with this condition should speak with a chiropractor about scheduling regular appointments. A chiropractor can help your loved one manage irregularities in the hips, back, shoulders, or neck, which can prevent future incidences of plantar fasciitis. 

4. Strengthen and Loosen the Calves

Many seniors develop chronic foot pain because their calf muscles become weaker and tighter as they grow older, which impacts how much support their heels receive. Your loved one should try to exercise his or her calf muscles at least once or twice a week to keep them loose and powerful.

5. Wear a Night Brace

Also called a splint, a night brace forces the foot to stay in a specific position so the plantar fascia ligament maintains its length. Most of these devices slide over the ankle and keep the toes pointed forward and slightly up. Seniors who have more severe cases of plantar fasciitis often have to wear their splints for a few hours during the day as well.
