4 Leisure Activities for Older Adults Living in Warren

By Kevin McClarren, 9:00 am on

Warren at-home care experts believe older adults should regularly engage in some sort of leisure activity because doing so can greatly benefit their overall wellbeing. Seniors living in Warren, NJ, can have some fun and brighten their mood by participating in the following 4 local leisure activities.

1. Fishing

The Dealaman Nature Trail and Pond at 182 Mount Horeb Road offers seniors a beautiful place to go fishing. From the parking lot, your aging loved one can walk to the pond approximately 100 yards through the woods. Residents aged 70 and older are exempt from needing a trout stamp or fishing license. Their driver’s license can serve as their fishing license. Also, any fish caught have to be returned to the pond. Fishing can help relieve your loved one’s stress and train his or her mind to focus.

2. Mah Jongg

The Warren Township Library at 42 Mountain Boulevard offers an exciting senior Mah Jongg game on Tuesdays from 1pm to 4pm. New players are always warmly welcomed, but those with some knowledge of the game are preferred. Mah Jongg is a wonderful social activity that can help boost your loved one’s memory skills and sharpen his or her mind.

3. Hiking

The Wagner Farm Arboretum at 197 Mountain Avenue offers access to an easy hiking trail that connects to the Glenhurst Meadows. This trail features over 2 miles of mainly level paths that loop around river edges and 2 open ponds. Aside from hiking, your loved one can also study nature and watch birds along this trail. The hike is often visually rewarding for seniors, but it can also increase their muscle strength and heart health.

4. Zumba Gold

On Mondays from 10:45am to 11:30am and Wednesdays from 11:30am to 12:15pm, the Warrenbrook Senior Center at 500 Warrenville Road offers this exciting dance-inspired class for seniors 60 and older. The dance routine taught in this class is modified to be senior-friendly. The moves will work your loved one’s arms, legs, and hip muscles and help increase his or her coordination.

Whatever type of leisure activity your loved one enjoys, make sure he or she has encouragement and support to continue participating in it.
